Writing Is a Process
Effective writers go through stages from the moment they have an idea for writing to the moment they publish their work. Even experienced writers go through these stages although they may not even realize it.
A problem many novice writers often run into is skipping over steps in the process because they believe they can get things done faster; as a result, they end up taking longer, getting frustrated, and producing poor work.

The Writing Process
Overview. Get a feel for the process from start to finish.
Objectives
In this course, you will learn how to use the writing process to write paragraphs, passages, or essays. You will first learn all the steps from beginning to end without getting into every detail (overview). Next, you will learn each step in detail:
- how to generate and select ideas appropriate for your writing task;
- how to plan your writing so that you have a “map” to follow in the subsequent steps,
- how to determine whether your topic is too broad or too narrow, and
- how to determine your purpose and target audience;
- how to create a thesis statement;
- how to outline your writing (introduction, body paragraphs, conclusion);
- how to organize your paragraphs around a topic statement and supporting details;
- how to write the introduction, body paragraphs, and the conclusion;
- how to revise and edit your draft; and
- how to finalize your work (formatting).
